Jim Corbett Safari Guide
Updated: September 2026
A jungle safari is the main reason most travellers visit Jim Corbett, and getting the details right — which zone to pick, when to go, and how to book — makes a real difference to your experience. This guide covers the safari zones, timings, seasons, booking process and wildlife you can expect, along with how close Manovan Resort is to the safari gates.
Jim Corbett Safari Zones
Jim Corbett National Park and its buffer areas are divided into several safari zones, each with its own entry gate, landscape and wildlife patterns:
- Dhikala — the largest and most ecologically diverse zone, set deep within the core area on a grassy plateau above the Ramganga reservoir. Best for serious wildlife enthusiasts and overnight stays inside the park.
- Bijrani — a mix of dense sal forest and open grassland, one of the most accessible zones with strong tiger-sighting potential.
- Jhirna — located in the southern part of the park and open throughout the year, including monsoon months when core zones are closed.
- Dhela — a newer zone known for large grasslands and steadily improving wildlife sightings, open year-round.
- Sitabani — a buffer zone outside the core tiger reserve, known for exceptional birdwatching (over 600 recorded species) and a more serene experience. Open throughout the year.
- Durga Devi — a scenic zone popular for birdwatching along the Ramganga river.
Best Time for a Jim Corbett Safari
Most core zones, including Dhikala and Bijrani, are open from mid-October or mid-November through to the end of June, and close during the monsoon season (roughly July to mid-October) due to weather and terrain conditions. Jhirna, Dhela and Sitabani stay open all year, making them the reliable choice if you're visiting during the monsoon. Winter (November to February) and early summer (March to April) are generally considered the most comfortable months for a safari, while summer (May–June) can offer strong sightings near water bodies despite the heat.
Safari Timings
Jeep safaris typically run in two shifts a day — an early morning slot and an afternoon slot — with each safari lasting around 3 to 3.5 hours. Exact gate timings shift with the season (morning slots start earlier in summer and later in winter), so it's best to confirm current timings when booking. Early morning safaris generally offer the best chance of sightings, as wildlife is more active during cooler hours.
Types of Safari
Jeep safari is the most common option and is available across all zones. Canter safari (a larger shared vehicle) is mainly available for Dhikala and typically runs longer, around 4 to 4.5 hours. Availability and options can change with park regulations, so it's worth checking current offerings at the time of booking.
How to Book a Jim Corbett Safari
Safaris are booked online through the official Corbett Tiger Reserve booking portal. A valid photo ID (driving licence, voter ID or PAN card for Indian nationals; passport for foreign nationals) is required at the time of booking, and slots are allotted on a first-come basis with a limited number of vehicles permitted per zone. Booking a few days in advance, especially in peak season (November to February), is recommended.
Wildlife You Might Spot
Jim Corbett is home to the Royal Bengal tiger, Asian elephants, leopards, several deer species (chital, sambar), and over 600 species of birds — with Sitabani being particularly rewarding for birdwatchers. Sightings are never guaranteed on any safari, but the park's mix of dense forest, grassland and riverine habitat gives a good chance of spotting wildlife across most zones.
